What is Root Canal Treatment?
A root canal or other endodontic treatment is a procedure to relieve pain and save the tooth. The inflamed or infected pulp is removed and the inside of the tooth (root canal system) is thoroughly cleaned and disinfected, then filled and sealed with a sealer and rubber-like material called gutta-percha. The tooth is subsequently restored with a crown or filling and will continue to function like any other tooth.
What happens during Root Canal Treatment?
Root canal treatment can often be completed in one or two visits and involves the following steps:
- Our triple-board certified Endodontist will do a comprehensive clinical and radiographic examination and diagnosis.
- After local anaesthesia is administered to numb the tooth, a small rubber sheet called a “dental dam” will be placed over the area to isolate the tooth and keep it clean and free of saliva during the procedure.
- An opening will then be made in the crown of the tooth and very fine instruments will be used to clean and shape the root canal system.
- Once the cleaning and shaping is complete, the root canals will be filled and sealed with a sealer and rubber-like material called gutta-percha.
- The tooth will then be restored with a filling. A crown is usually required and arrangements will be made for it to be done.
